The name is an ode to the classical music performances at the imperial court and shrine, and like the spirit of beauty in the concept, every dish offers an enchanting and modern interpretation of tradition. With up-close seating at the exclusive 16-seater Chef’s table, intimate table seating, or private dining options, each course presents an artisanal interpretation of the four seasons, blending classic Kaiseki principles with contemporary culinary innovation for a truly unforgettable experience.

Meet the Chef

Derek Kim 

Chef Derek Kim takes the helm at Garaku, bringing with him a rich background of experience and a deep passion for Japanese culinary traditions. His career is marked by dedication to precision and creativity, most recently during his time as Executive Head Chef at Tetsuya’s in Sydney. There, Chef Kim honed his expertise in fine dining and leadership, excelling in managing a high-performing kitchen team.

He has also gained invaluable international experience in Europe at notable restaurants including Public Dining Room and Restaurant Copenhague in France, where he absorbed diverse European culinary styles.

His leadership and wealth of experience will help write an exciting new chapter at Garaku.

“MISE-EN-SCENE” by Tokyo-based spatial designer Hiroto Yoshizoe is a captivating pixel panel artwork that graces Garaku. This digital tapestry cleverly juxtaposes the orderly procession of an imperial stage with the bustling activity behind the scenes, mirroring the chef’s lavish culinary performance. Celebrating the seasons, the artwork encapsulates Garaku’s theatrical dining experience, blending tradition with innovation. Yoshizoe, known for his work in hospitality spaces and winner of the LEXUS DESIGN AWARD 2017, brings his unique perspective to this piece, creating a visual narrative that complements Garaku’s exquisite Kaiseki cuisine.

What are the booking policies and cancellation fees

Our booking policies state that for cancellations made within 48 hours of the reservation time, a cancellation fee of $350 per guest will be charged.

Is there a booking deposit required?

There is no booking deposit required; however, we do need credit card details to secure your reservation. Please note that cancellations made within 48 hours of the reservation will incur a fee.

What is the venue capacity?

The venue has a capacity of 42 guests.

What is the maximum booking size?

The maximum booking size is 10 guests.

What is the seating duration?

The seating duration is 2 hours and 30 minutes.

What is the minimum spend per person?

There is no minimum spend per person, as we operate with a set menu.

Is there disability access?

Yes, we have disability access available, including a lift.

How many guests before set menus are required & what is the minimum number of guests to get a set menu?

We only offer a set menu, which is available for all bookings regardless of the number of guests.

Do you cater to dietaries on the set menu?

Unfortunately, we only accommodate dietary requirements for gluten-free options on the set menu.

How many guests before a service fee is charged?

A service fee is charged for bookings of 6 guests or more.

Our kitchen is not halal certified; however, we do offer many halal-friendly dishes, except the Japanese Wagyu.
